This is the only hotel in the world where they guarantee you a cold
reception.
We've come to Quebec City, Canada to find out how they celebrate winter.
They have more than their share of snow here and, like Minnesotans,
these French Canadians know how to have fun.
It
all begins as soon as it gets as cold is ice! In this hilly, wooded area about
thirty miles north west of Quebec City, adjacent to a popular resort, a small
army of construction workers and artists are busy putting together a winter wonder.
The soaring cathedral-like
walls and ceilings are not just for show, this is one of the most efficient and
stable ways to construct big buildings out of hard packed snow. It took 12-thousand
tons of snow and 400 tons of ice to create this cool building, which is one of
the hottest tourist destinations in the world. When finished it will be a fully
functioning hotel built entirely from ice and snow. The
genius behind this strictly seasonal project is Jacques Desbois who started out
making igloos for adventure seeking tourists. Jacques Desbois said, "The
genesis of this was my personal relation with winter."
The
construction of this building costs over 400-thousand US dollars and, because
inevitably come spring it will melt, the whole thing has to be rebuilt every year!
Desbois said, "We look for innovation, technically and artistically also.
Every time we will open the door for the first time we have to say it is the best
ever." While the
main structure of the ice hotel is snow, sometimes up to six feet thick, everything
else, the furniture, the tall supporting columns, the decorations and even the
chandeliers are made of ice. But it's just not any old ice, it's made in a factory
in Montreal nearly 150 miles away. Desbois
said, "Freeze drinkable water and purging the air. Because you know when
we are making ice blocks they are white because there are a lot of air bubbles.
There's practically no bubbles in this." After 5 weeks of work, The Ice Hotel
is officially open and ready for guests. Visitors
come here from all over the world, just so they can say, "I spent the night
in a 5 star igloo! This is some igloo! From the outside it looks like a medieval
fortress made of snow but it's the inside that blows most people away. One
tourist said, "It's just amazing. It's all made of ice. It's once in a lifetime."
Another tourist said, "It's just amazing, it's so huge, and the rooms go
on and on." When we looked around it was truly amazing. It may be way below
zero outside the walls but here in the ice hotel it stays a few chilly but comfortable
degrees below freezing. Which
is just as well, because if it got any warmer everything you see here would melt!
A fireplace only gives the illusion of comfort, it too, is made of just frozen
water! The work of ice
sculptors and snow carvers fill cavernous rooms with glittering dioramas illustrating
the history of the native Inuit people of the north, and the French voyageurs
who came here to trade for furs over three hundred years ago. There
is even a couple of art galleries, with works in frozen frames, a magnificent
chapel where people come from all over the world to get married, and, everywhere
you look, there are the dramatic reliefs carved into the walls, some people call
them friezies! The ice
hotel attracts more than 50-thousand day visitors a year who pay less than 15
dollars to wander around inside this gigantic residential refrigerator, but it
is at night that things really warm up!
The
ice hotel boasts not one but two bars. Complete with all the usual fittings, tables,
chairs, serving areas and even booths, all made of solid ice! The scene is reminiscent
of any popular saloon in the world except that everyone here is wearing several
layers of clothing, hats, gloves and boots. Appetizers
go fast, they have to be eaten before they freeze. The drinks don't come on the
rocks, they come in the rocks! Partygoers only lower the masks and scarves from
their faces long enough to sip their brightly colored shots of vodka and juice.
And these drinks pack a punch, watch this lady in the blue parka blink! And
this all takes place under hundreds of tons of snow! When Jacques Desbois designed
his ice hotel he always wanted it to be somewhere that people could actually sleep.
Desbois said, "How can we be more in winter than being in it?" "In
it," means to sleep completely enclosed by snow on a bed of ice topped by
a wood frame and a pretty hard mattress, which is just about the only piece of
furniture in the room. The
hotel has thirty-two bedrooms, many designed by local university architectural
students. There is no running water and lighting is only provided by one low voltage
bulb. There are heated bathrooms... in a portable building in the center of the
complex, but no showers in the hotel. But
it is the fanciful suites that set this place apart as the strangest inn on the
American continent. Yanick Lajoie the Night guide said, "I personally sleep
naked in that with dry socks and a hat."
37
year old Simon Drew and Anna Walters who is 30 have come all the way from Coventry
in England to spend the night in the Ice Hotel. But before they can go to bed
they join other couples for a mandatory orientation session. They have never
experienced such cold temperatures and listen skeptically to Yanick as he explains
that getting into a sleeping bag wearing too many clothes is not a good idea. Yanick
said, "Mainly the danger is being too hot then sweating." It's a short
walk through the white and crystal wonderland of the hotel's public areas to the
sleeping quarters where this adventurous couple will experience what they call
here a deluxe winter camping experience. The hotel staff help carry your bags,
your sleeping bags! Anna
said, "We wanted something different." That's what they got, a large
windowless snow chamber with splashes of color provided by a few drapes, black
bed cover and a couple of bright red heart shaped pillows. Anna said, "I've
slept outdoors but nothing this cold." Time
to turn in, but this couple are determined to wear as many clothes as possible,
at least at first. It's chilly, a little uncomfortable and the bathrooms are fifty
feet away but, after a kiss goodnight these honeymooners are ready to become among
the very few who can claim to have spent a night in the Ice Hotel.
History and charm combine in Quebec City
History
and charm combine in Quebec City The traditional home of French-Canadian culture,
it reflects the early New World and the cosy comforts of bistros Sara
Benson King Features Syndicate Saturday, October 22, 2005 vancouversun.com Founded
in 1608, Quebec City is the traditional spiritual home of French Canada. Now a
UNESCO World Heritage site, this northern enclave encompasses cobblestone streets,
clifftop perches and narrow passageways that reveal churches and hotels poised
for panoramas of the St. Lawrence River below. The
walled old city, called Vieux-Quebec, is split between the Haute-Ville (Upper
Town) and Basse-Ville (Lower Town). History hounds can't get any higher than at
La Citadelle de Quebec, a fort at the peak of Cap Diamant (Cape Diamond). The
changing-of-the-guard ceremony on summer mornings gives a peek at Canada's colonial
past. In Parc des Champs-de-Bataille (Battlefield Park), the British defeated
the French on the Plains of Abraham in 1759, sealing the province's fate. Today
the Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec displays rare works drawn from Canada's
Inuit nations as well as a trove of Quebecois statuary, much of it evincing a
rustic Catholicism. Caleches
(horse-drawn carriages) convey mad romantics around the Old Town. For walkers,
a five-kilometre circuit atop the walls can be a meditative hike; from May to
October, guided tours depart from the Porte St.-Louis. In 1633 French explorer
Samuel de Champlain built the chapel that was transformed into the impressive
Basilique-Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Quebec in the Latin Quarter. The Musee de l'Amerique
Francaise next door tells the tale of French settlement in the New World. Wandering
around the museum's quiet seminary courtyards and peering at the purported relics
of saints will uplift your soul. More
earthly pleasures await inside the Chateau Frontenac, one of the grand luxury
hotels built by the Canadian Pacific Railway just before the turn of the 20th
century. This castle-like hotel is backed by the grassy strolling grounds of the
Terrasse Dufferin. After your visit, ride the funicular or risk the Escalier Casse-Cou
("Break-Neck Stairs") down to the Lower Town, centered on the Place
Royale. Follow the hordes along rue du Petit Champlain and into the Musee de la
Civilisation, which delves into the culture of first nations peoples. Venture
farther outside the walls around the Vieux-Port (Old Port) area. Catch a ferry
across the St. Lawrence to the town of Levis for the views back to the city. Amble
along rue St.-Paul, its antiques and vintage shops overflowing with early 20th-century-modern
wares and reminders of more pastoral times. Yet
don't think Quebec is stuck in its past. There's a modern, even bohemian side
to this city. Feel it in the gentrifying St. Roch district, with its art galleries
on rue St.-Vallier Est. DJs spin at L'Aviatic Club nearby inside the sumptuous
Gare du Palais train station. Outside the Upper Town's western walls, traipse
along rue St.-Jean right into a heady mix of fashion-forward boutiques, cosy bistros
and bars. Quebec is a
city for all seasons. In summer, free performances happen in the public squares
of the Upper Town, especially near the Hotel de Ville (City Hall). Or brave the
deep freeze during February, when the Carnaval de Quebec winter carnival creates
ice sculptures, snow slides, and fetes of music and drink, and visit North America's
only ice hotel. Elsewhere in "La Belle Province," you can go skiing
in the quaint resort towns of the Laurentians or, in the warmer months, escape
to pastoral Ile d'Orleans, an island of apple orchards, wineries and farmhouse
restaurants that cook wild game. Wherever
you wander in Quebec, take time out to revel in the unrushed pace of life. It's
the province's joie de vivre you'll long for as soon as you leave. Where

The
PURELY SENSATIONALWinter Experience The
Story of the Ice Hotel Québec-Canada
Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier, Québec The Peak
Winter Experience.Forthathis cathedthe sixth season of the Ice Hotel Québec-Canada,
which will be even more spectacular n the first five, this is what we are offering:
a visit, an event, and even a night stay in ral-like hotel (made from the purest
of all natural resources, namely water) guarantee the most surreal experiences.
Its immense halls are adorned with beautiful artwork emerging from walls of snow
and ice. You will see
exquisite furniture created from sheer ice and aunique ice chandelier hanging
from its 18 foot ceiling. The Ice Hotel opens its crystalline halls for its guests
and visitors yearly in early January only to be fated to disappear in early April
as it slowly melts away under the warm spring sun. The inspiration for this unique
tourist attraction comes from the small Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi where
an Ice Hotel has been welcoming guests every winter for more than ten years. Each
year, thousands of visitors from around the world travel to admire this architectural
achievement. Its beauty, size, and the quality of its design and artwork, carved
out of snow and ice, are simply astonishing. Now, North America can experience
its own dazzling version of this winter tourist attraction. The incomparable Ice
Hotel is well on its way to becoming the solesubject of Quebecs, Canadas,
and North Americas most outstanding winter postcard. With
each passing year, it has assumed the role of an exceptional tourism product for
international markets, attracting an increasing number of tourists for the region,
province, and the country. Since its conception, this project has benefited from
constant high-level support from the Government of Quebec. The Société
des établissements de plein air du Québec (Sépaq) has wholeheartedly
supported the project by contributing the wonderful site known as the Station
écotouristique Duchesnay.
Local support, through the efforts of the Tourism and Convention Bureau of the
Quebec, was also instrumental in helping the dream become a reality. After five
years of dedication, partners Jacques Desbois and Yvon Guérard are geared
to launch operations for the upcoming season. This amazing success story has captured
the attention of media worldwide, from India to Brazil, from Australia to Europe.
There have been more
than 1,000 international reports recorded on the Ice Hotel since spring 2000,
with as many national reports. It has also been the recipient of numerous awards,
including two from the Grand Prix du Tourisme québécois; the Tourism
Personality of the year 2001 award granted to Mr. Jacques Desbois, CEO of the
Ice Hotel and one for the Best Attraction 2002 (100,000 visitors and less). Fortunately,
the wonderful media coverage has directed more traffic to our website with an
average of 150,000 user sessions per month! Year after year, the Ice Hotel attracts
an increasing number of visitors. The first five years, 220,000 people visited
the Ice Hotel, including 10,500 who experienced a magical night stay at the Ice
Hotel. The fascinating
décor, as well as the original activities and services developed by a dedicated
staff has up to this point, inspired over 10,000 people to hold special events
(eg.weddings, anniversaries, corporate celebrations, product launches, and film
productions. Surely, everyone has heard of the amazing Ice Hotel and its venture
partners by now. All
this interest in the Ice Hotel leaves no doubt that it is indeed the ABSOLUT winter
experience! The starting this project required dedication, hard work, vision and
a lot of imagination! During
the development of the project, the partners of the Ice Hotel had to overcome
a number of challenges. Throughout this process they were faced with incredible
odds to convince sceptics that this project was operationally feasible and that
it had real and solid financial potential. irth: An Intriguing Idea
In 1996, as he was establishing La Piste Desbois, an eco-tourism company, Jacques
Desbois, a winter enthusiast and lover of snow, happened upon a magazine article
about the Swedish Ice Hotel. Lightning Struck! Mr. Igloo as he is
known, proclaimed, If they can do it in Sweden, we can do it here in Quebec,
the snow capital of the world. With
that, he packed his bags and off he went to Jukkasjärvi, Sweden to meet with
the creators of this magical structure. With the eventual plan of setting up a
North American Ice Hotel, he established his company and acquired years of experience
in eco-tourism and outdoor activities. La
Piste Desbois is the only business in Canada specialized in the making and management
of Igloo Villages. Festivals, museums, municipalities and diverse organizations
use the specialized services of La Piste Desbois, namely the famous Quebec City
Winter Carnival, Montreals Fête des Neiges, and Québecs
Museum of Civilisation. His
original concepts have enthralled countless tourists and thousands of Quebecers,
both young and old. I Thet was important for Jacques Desbois to find dedicated
partners who would help realize this dream and in Yvon Guérard and Michel
Mordret, he definitely has. They were immediately fascinated by the idea and possibilities
of the Ice Hotel. The
next step for Mr. Desbois was to convince others of the feasibility of this project,
which he accomplished easily with his enthusiasm and innovation. He convinced
many to embark on this once in a lifetime adventure and fund the Hôtel
de Glace Québec-Canada Inc./ Ice Hotel Quebec-Canada Inc.Great Team!Yvon
Guérard is an experienced consultant and professor of management, finance
and business start-ups. Ever
the curious mind, he is always on the lookout for any new trend in management,
to provide the greatest benefit for his partners. He is the driving force behind
this solid business base and will provide his expertise to supervise the financial
controls of the company. Seen
as a visionary in the travel and tourism industry, Michel Mordret is a well-known
consultant with over 30 years experience. As Executive Vice President of Air Transat
Vacations, he broke new ground in the development of one of the top emerging airlines
in North America. Michel Mordret will provide strategic planning advice to our
sales and marketing teams. In order to reach their goal, they have put together
a skilled team of dedicated and motivated professionals who have solid communications,
marketing and business experience. The
Ice Hotel partners can also rely on a reliable crew to make the structure and
a talented team to ensure daily operations. At first, this idea was more
of a construction challenge for me but I soon realized that sucha project required
a solid finance and marketing team in order to attain its full potential.

commitment and support from public organizations and the regional tourism sector,

in a Winter Wonderland? Sizzling weddings on ice! Every year, more and
more couples choose to celebrate their nuptials in the chapel of Quebec's famous
Ice Hotel, constructed of 16,000 tons of snow and ice. A wedding ceremony
at the Ice Hotel Chapel.
The Ice Hotel, located 30 minutes west of Quebec City in Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier,
opens its crystalline halls for its guests and visitors yearly in early January,
only to be fated to disappear in early April as it slowly melts away under the
warm spring sun. The inspiration for this unique tourist attraction comes from
the small Swedish village of Jukkasj³rvi where an Ice Hotel has been welcoming
guests every winter for more than ten years. 2005 marked the Quebec City version's
fifth season, with a redesigned chapel and more than 30 couples celebrating their
weddings there. In 2005, "We surpassed last year's total by at least
a dozen," says Jacques Desbois, CEO of the Ice Hotel. "Increasingly,
people look to add an unusual element to their special day and choose a destination
wedding." Couples
from across North America take advantage of the Ice Wedding adventure. In 2003,
Carrie Van Vert and Thomas Gosselin Fontaine wished for a little non-traditional
wedding. At first, the lovers from Masury, Ohio thought about having just their
honeymoon at the Ice Hotel, but after hearing about the Ice Chapel, they opted
for a destination ceremony as well. After
the wedding, their romantic escapade continued when they left the Ice Hotel in
a dog sled, followed by an intimate candle-lit dinner and a cozy evening in the
007 Suite, a replica of the great room from the most recent Bond flick! Adventurous
activities are actually the norm: dogsledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross-country
skiing, snow shoeing, and skating are available in pre-arranged packages through
local hotel partners. For
the less adventurous, creature comforts have not been ignored: bathroom facilities
are inside and heated, the internal temperature is higher than outside, and rooms
feature box springs and mattresses (on ice) with a high quality, well-rated warm
sleeping bag. Because
the Ice Hotel is recreated every year, makeovers and fabulous redesigns are the
norm. In 2005, the chapel was the focus of innovation. Inspired by the first churches
built in Quebec, a design consisting of a snow dome and snow steeple that overhung
an ice wall, a reminder of the region's magnificent ecclesiastical building facades
from the early 20th century. Special attention was also paid to the interior decoration
of this place of celebration, with soaring pillars and ecclesiastic details rendered
in crystal clear ice. ---------------------- Video
from CBS news here (CBS)
What's made of 15,000 tons of snow and 500,000 tons of ice and hosts 70,000 tourists
during its four-month lifespan each year? It's
the Ice Hotel Quebec-Canada, just outside Quebec City. Dave
Price braved the elements inside to give viewers of The Early Show a tour (video)
Friday. Said Price,
"You have artwork. You have ambience. All you're missing, really, is heat."
He pointed out that,
"The snow actually insulates you." Believe
it or not, the ice hotel is considered a luxury facility, even though the temperature
inside its 34 rooms is only 28 degrees. CEO
Jacques Desbois told Price he loves winter, and the hotel enables him to enjoy
the season in "a surrealistic way." The
hotel is put together for a January opening each year, then brought down in April.
Operations Manager Benoit
Dube explained to Price that the hotel is built, basically, with only 10 tools.
"It takes about
a-month-and-a-half to build, and 60 people are working," Dube said. "Basically,
two things, the ice guys and the snow guys. "We
actually make our own snow. It's a special mixture so we can adjust the humidity.
We have metal frames that we put up together. We blow the snow with a big snow-blower
and let it harden for a few days, and then remove the cranes, and then it stays
together" until we bring it down again. The
walls are four-feet thick in some places, "hard as concrete," Price
observed. He noted that
Quebec gets about 132 inches of snow a year. ------------------------------------- Located
some 800 km north of Boston, Quebec City is the only walled city in North America
and the oldest city north of the Mexican border. Founded in 1608, the city is
renowned for its European charm and magnificent scenery which attract tourists
from around the world. Quebec City has been designated a world heritage site by
UNESCO. Quebec City
residents enjoy the benefits of both an urban centre and the countryside, with
several picturesque historical towns and numerous breathtaking parks located nearby.
The region is large
enough to offer the services enjoyed in larger cities but also small enough to
preserve a sense of community. It offers a family oriented lifestyle and a relaxed
atmosphere. Quebec
City is located at the heart of a very attractive economic region. This is in
part due to its geographic location and access to a market representing over 360
million consumers, 80 million of which are in a 1,000 km radius. The region itself
offers a diversified economic base and the population's strong entrepreneurial
culture consistently leads to the creation of new businesses. ------------------

------------------------- ICE
HOTEL Take, for example,
Quebec's Ice Hotel (877-505-0423, www.icehotel-canada.com) located near the ski
areas of Stoneham, Le Massif and Mont-Sainte-Anne. From the outside, it looks
like a gothic Quonset hut crafted from molded snow and crystal ice. Inside, it's
a 34-room frozen palace of glacier blue and hoary white. Inside
temperatures hover around 23-28 degrees. Light filters through block-ice ''windows,''
deer pelts cover slab-ice benches, and cube-ice chandeliers dangle overhead. Galleries
display frozen sculptures, a movie theater shows films on a snow screen, and a
bar serves vodka in the rocks. Overnight
guests slumber in sleeping bags atop pelt- and pad-insulated ''mattresses'' of
ice. Basic rooms feature unadorned walls and few furnishings. More exciting are
the annually changing theme suites featuring frigid fantasies of art and architecture.
Previous motifs have included a King Tut-adorned Pharaoh fantasia, an Eiffel-towered
Parisian parlor and a voodoo-haunted Shaman suite. ''This
is for adventurers, explorers and people who want the unusual,'' says guide Louise
Vidal. ``If you want room service, don't come here.'' Prices
run about $300 per night for two, with breakfast. A heated trailer holds toilets
and showers, and outside, a sauna and hot tubs stand ready to thaw chilled souls.
Open Jan. 5 to April 1. ----------------------
