Auberge Beaulieu
in Mekinac Quebec
The lovely Jacynthe is ready for Snowmobilers

At 8 am the log built restaurant opens it's doors, with fresh coffe
brewing, and smiling service. I sit and read the paper by the fire,
and relax. The rest of the world where I came from seems to melts
into to insignificance. I love this place. My breakfast is always
perfect. The smell of wood burning and the awesome heat it throws,
heals me somehow. No wonder Dr.C loved this place so much.

Dec 3 2007: St-Joseph-de-Mekinac-- The Mauricie Region has been blessed
with tons of snow and cold temperatures, and the big river is in the
process of freezing over. The snowmobile club says they will soon
be running the trail groomers, without pulling the big scrapper on
the first go round. They will run the 350 kms of trail once, to flatten
and pack the two feet of snow and create a solid base, then they will
go over it again pulling a two ton sled, to make it smooth for the
snowmobiles. Auberge Beaulieu is on that trail, and has the staff,
the rooms, the bar and the restaurant ready to go. The party is definitely
on! (The photo above shows the amount of snow in front of the town
church.)

The surrounding countryside is draped in a new thick coating of white.

The village air is pristine, cold, and inviting. The people are warm.

Four generations of Beaulieu's have lived in this building. It has
gone through many transformations, from a home to a store, to an eight
room hotel with a six bed apartment upstairs to accommodate larger
groups. The building is clean and fully renovated, heated by two massive
wood stoves in the basement, where there are forty cords of dry firewood
ready to go.

The hand hewn log cabin resto-bar next door, is handy to the guests
and features a beautiful wood stove that takes the chill out of all
visiting ATVers and snowmobilers. The food is simple and delicious.
Home made soups, salads and desserts compliment the tasty home made
pasta dishes, steaks, and hearty sandwiches. The music is lively,
and the staff are outgoing.

Perhaps the best part is the people you will meet inside. It seems
everyone living here come from all over the world. A few are from
here, but it is not surprising to meet many who have chose to live
in the Mekinac town, that are from Europe, the USA, or from Montreal
and Quebec City. With a population of about 500, it makes for a cosy
place. All the locals take great pride in welcoming visitors - there
are no strangers here by the fire.

Laurieanne strikes a pose with Dianne who owns the resto-bar and the
hotel with her husband Jean Beaulieu.

Jacynthe is one of the servers, and she has worked for the Beaulieu's
since she was fourteen! When employees hang around that long, something
special is happening. She is adorable, and makes you feel like you
belong in her bar. I remember her from my last visit here, and I have
to admit, she is one of my favorites!

People arrive here all day from both the snowmobile trails, and the
ATV trails. Meet Gaetan and Linda from Quebec City on their brand
new Bombardier Quad. It's an 800 cc with an automatic tranny. They
are out enjoying winter camping, they told me. Wow - they have guts.
It's 20 below at night!

They warm upfor a moment, then sit to enjoy some delicious home coked
lasagna with toasted garlic bread covered in melted cheese. Mmmm.
Soon they will be ready to brave the elements again, and the two feet
of fresh snow out on the trails.

One of the locals, a Mr Parent, built this baby in his garage. It
is simply a 500 Polaris quad, converted into a six wheeler and a cabin
on top to keep out the cold. He came by for hot soup and a chicken
club - a nice fellow. His machine attracted some attention from all
of us.

This is a great place to make new friends.
Back out in the cold, Jean Beaulieu and members of the local snowmobile
club, volounteer to go out and put the signage out on the local trails
so that the rest of us won's get lost. When you get here, any one
of them will volounteer to explain the trail maps. From here you can
go anywhere in Quebec on the main snowmobile trails.
